Bills we’re watching…
These bad bills are moving – but there’s still time to contact your state legislators before they become law.
HB 1007, SB 423 and SB 424 would lock in high energy costs to subsidize nuclear and coal. They detract from important investments in affordable, renewable energy needed now.
The nuclear subsidy would fund risky SMR projects through automatic rate hikes, putting ratepayers on the hook for years, even if no electricity is ever produced. SMRs are costly and unproven – none operate in the U.S. After nearly a decade, Idaho’s NuScale SMR project was canceled due to soaring costs, despite federal funding, and South Carolina’s $9 billion Nukegate failure left ratepayers on the hook with nothing in return. These bills force you to bankroll these risky projects without providing you with clear consumer protections against cost overruns, delays, or failures.
The coal subsidy in HB1007 makes it harder to retire uneconomic coal plants and raises rates to keep them running. Duke’s recent $395 million rate hike shows how continued reliance on coal drains millions from Hoosiers. This subsidy prolongs carbon pollution, worsens extreme climate impacts and costs, threatening our communities and the future for kids and grandkids.
Please tell your state legislators to oppose HB1007, SB423, and SB424 to protect Hoosier families, schools, and businesses. CAC has an easy way to do this.
